My Photography Studio is Ten!

In the words of Public Enemy, Nineteen Eighty Nine!
The Leap, 2011
In March 2011 I took the plunge, leaving a wonderful job, a kind boss and an ace team to set up my own photography studio. I remember my hand was shaking when I handed over my notice letter and I felt really sad to go. But I had a burning desire to take this risk and do something that had been in the back of my mind. I was to turn 40 the following year and wanted to achieve a goal to start my own business before I hit this milestone. Pic below is me (in black sandals) with the ND Creative team I left behind in Horsley.
The Journey
Photography Business Training
When I set up my business after working in studios since 2002 in both portraiture and advertising I felt diversely experienced in photography and well prepared to manage projects and work flow. However I knew little about running a business and so signed up for a local scholarship scheme that supported start ups in digital media. Middlesborough University’s Digital City offered courses and funding for digital businesses such as Photographers, Graphic Designers and Website Designers so I placed myself on the long waiting list. Simultaneously I signed a contract for a studio in Kingsland Church, Byker a building converted into artist spaces for the local creatives, first a small then later that year a double space as you see below.
Disaster and my first adaptation
Two months into my business launch and training, my father became ill and died very suddenly of heart failure. The shock and grief was unbearable as he had just turned 60 and was fit and healthy. I had to pause everything I was working towards for a moment to focus inwards and work out how to cope. Only weeks before this he had bought me an upgrade of my very basic Nikon D70 to a more professional Nikon D300 camera in support of my venture. This is what drove me to return to my studio. I knew he’d have been really proud of me if I could make it a success.
I printed a huge poster for my studio wall with the word Believe from a set of photos I took at the Hoppings Fairground on Newcastle town moor in 2010, somewhere that had lovely hook-a-duck memories for me as child. This positive message helped though the private teary moments and kept me focussed for years. There is added tongue in cheek as this is the Freak Show telling believe in ‘Remo the 2 headed fox’ and giants that ‘must be seen’. If you believe in that well you’ll believe in anything! And other excitingly news you can actually believe, you can have your very own Hoppings Fair Photo Print along with others on my Fine Art Print shop here
And now
Then in 2020 after so many ups and downs and adaptations to fab and not so fab years, the pandemic hit! It meant a temporary halt to all work in spring and to my summer exhibition ‘Peckham Loves Me 2020’. This was a project marking a return to the places I captured in 2000 for my degree show at Camberwell College. More info on the Peckham project can be seen on this blog here and it is 100%, to be continued!
For highlights of my decade you can see some some amazing experiences on my blog, just click on the live links; 2012 sees me teaching summer school at Goldsmiths University, 2013 brings Thames TV to film Take Me Out in my studio and shooting for TK Maxx on a moving metro the same year.
More 10th anniversary work will be live on a pandemic friendly, virus free, virtual exhibition coming later this month! Watch this space…
How to prepare for a portrait photoshoot: essential tips for men
/0 Comments/in Commercial, Portraits/by Sarah DeaneWhether you’re looking for a stunning personal portrait or factoring in the importance of a professional profile picture, there are a handful of things you should do to prepare for your shoot at my Newcastle Photography studio. You want great photos and I want you to walk away super happy. And we can do that together. So, men! What do I need you to think about before you head to the shoot? The following essential tips will help us get you a great portrait.
Look after your skin
The best portraits show you off in the most natural way possible. And that’s how I like to work. If you do want photos re-touched to cover blemishes, bags under the eyes etc. that can, of course, be done. But the less refinishing we do, the better your portrait is going to look. After all, the last thing you want is a photo that’s been so altered it doesn’t look like you.
So, how can you look after your skin before the shoot? Time for a little bit of male grooming… if you don’t already. That means cleansing and moisturising daily. Drinking plenty of water, and making sure you get enough sleep. Give your skin the support it needs and it’ll look great in the pictures.
Grooming
We’ve got the ball rolling with skin care, but there are a couple of other areas to consider. These include:
• Teeth. Consider having them professionally cleaned if you feel the need, but certainly try to avoid anything that could cause staining or damage to your teeth. Look after your teeth and they’ll look after you. I want you to feel confident when you smile for the camera!
• Facial hair. Gents, the last thing we want on your portrait is frizzy hair. Men with beards should keep them tamed and trim. If you’re unsure whether your facial hair looks untidy (and it’s not something that you’ve been carefully cultivating for months), consider trimming to tidy stubble or going clean shaved.
Go for a trim
If your hair is a little unruly, or it’s been a while since you last had a cut, unless this is your desired style it’s definitely a good idea to go for a trim before we start the shoot. But. It’s not a great idea to do it the day before – a week in advance is about right.
It might also not be the best time to go for something drastic or try out a completely new style. Instead, just have a tidy up or a quick trim to create a sharper fresher look. Men look a lot more polished in their portraits with a tidy haircut, so get it booked in.
Get your clothes ready
Do you need a professional portrait for business? Something for your modelling portfolio? Or an actor’s shot? Smart or casual? Whatever it is, you want options when it comes to your clothes. So, take some time to think about what those options could be, making sure that your outfits are laundered before the shoot. Bring several options with you so we can shoot different looks and choose the best.
If you have any questions, just ask
I take a tailored approach to all of my shoots and treat every client with care and consideration. If you have any questions about anything to do with the preparation or the shoot itself, just call or contact me through my website. Put these preparation tips into play and I promise we’ll get the shot you want.
Pregnancy Photography in Newcastle
/0 Comments/in Portraits/by Sarah DeanePortraits are what I love and when it is Portraiture of a couple rather than an individual it’s double the fun! This month I had the pleasure of capturing some gorgeous Maternity Photography of these two (soon to be three) beautiful people, Masitano and his pregnant wife Chabala at my Newcastle Photo Studio. I love Maternity Shoots with an almost ready to pop bump! The women look delicious and the men are doey eyed, it’s a dreamy photo combo.
To capture the amazing curves and shapes that pregnancy brings I always advise the best time to visit my studio is around 35 weeks onwards. Also it is wise to avoid being photographed too close to a delivery date as I have also observed some women can find the last few weeks hard work and they are understandably not in a photo shoot mood!
I always want my studio time to be enjoyable and relaxing so that my clients leave having had a really lovely and memorable experience. For couples being photographed, it’s often very atmospheric and loving as these shots show. Masitano and Chabala are clearly very in love and the imagery reflects the tenderness between them. As a photographer you are often observing your subjects from the sideline, but with a pregnancy studio shoot like this, I find it is important to work closely with the couple to capture personality and emotion.
Chabala had researched pregnant couple imagery online that she liked, some on Instagram and others on Pinterest and brought screen shots to the photo session. This was very helpful for me as I used this to guide my choices on backdrop colours and lighting effects. The preferred photographic style had simplicity and intimacy as its strengths, all images with well executed flattering lighting in grey and black tones. It was perfect for my portrait style.
Clothing always plays a large part in the end result of an image, dictating colours, texture and atmosphere. The looks Masitano and Chabala chose were fantastic, focusing their attention to clothing fabrics and shapes including gold lame no less! Chabala had a long black stretch jersey dress to create the ultimate bump silhouette and hair up to allow for stylish femininity and a slick smart finish. Masitano wore a simple white crisp cotton shirt to complement the lame dress glamour then for the casual shots, dark grey textured denim and a pair of Dr Marten boots loosely laced with their leather and shape giving a sense of sturdiness and strength.
I felt really proud of these shots and was as ever, flattered to know this couple chose me as their photographer for such a special time in their lives. I was thrilled that they were happy for me to share the images and to promote my studio maternity photography here at the studio. Thank you Masitano and Chabala, and good luck with the next stage in your adventure!
If you would like an opportunity to chat through ideas for your pregnancy shoot please get in touch on my online form or call my number and I’d be happy to discuss. Or if you have a specific portfolio request and would like a good excuse to get out of your lockdown joggers and don some nice clothes just shout!

Newcastle Photography Charity Face Masks
/0 Comments/in Assorted, Commercial, Portraits/by Sarah DeaneOne of the first photography commissions I was asked to do after lockdown eased was so perfectly fitting for current times! A face mask product shoot for local Newcastle based charity Clothe & Feed, no less! Rob Turnbull the charity’s founder got in touch and needed various portrait photos of their new handmade mask range on models ranging in age, cultural diversity, sex, size and height.
It was a particularly fun and interesting shoot as Rob handed over a good deal of creative direction of the portrait and product photos to me, so I made it all about the colour! The brief was to create eye-catching block colour backdrops ie boxes of colour with a masked model within and we agreed the shots should show a little character to add personality to the product. We wanted a ‘something for everybody’ vibe!
Having chosen a colour scheme for the Colorama backdrops, (pumpkin, leaf, forget-me-not, buttercup-all the plant colours!) when the models arrived dressed with a box of beautifully made masks, I paired mask fabrics to their clothing and a background colour. It was fab to get the creative juices flowing! A particular favourite colour combo of mine is orange and blue (opposites on the colour wheel therefore perfectly matched) and so this was to be the strongest theme for the photography throughout. Particularly as Charity Masks logo is blue and all the funds go to North East not for profit charity Clothe and Feed, which has an orange logo. Just perrrfick!
The models Rob organised were absolutely incredible for many reasons, 1- they weren’t professional but performed as such, 2- they were giving up their time for a Face Mask charity that helps underprivileged parents and vulnerable children in Newcastle, 3- they looked fantastic, posed well and presented themselves beautifully in their own well thought out clothing and accessories. There is even a FOUR! They were all SO up for it! Such fun to work with and everyone left with a smile on their face. Big shout to the amazing Joan who was 91 and this was her first trip out of home in 4 months!
I was thrilled with the results and so here some some faves from the photography taken in my studio that day! To find out more, to support the charity or simply to stock up on what I’ve found to be the most breathable and comfy masks out of all I have tried, use the links above! Oh and…watch out for vending machines in Intu shopping centres coming soon!
